Mukama is a strong Finnish D2C brand offering a wide range of products essential for daily use. The brand sells every day carry products extensively, not only in the domestic market but also internationally, demonstrating strong and sustainable international D2C sales capabilities.

Founded in 2013, Mukama’s first online store has grown over the years to serve hundreds of thousands of customers and accumulated vast amounts of detailed product data. The original PrestaShop platform could no longer meet the business’s needs for agility and scalability, so the decision was made to switch to a new platform that could eliminate development bottlenecks and accelerate growth. The extensive data on orders, customers, and products accumulated over the years needed to be securely migrated to the new, more agile, and internationally focused Shopify Plus platform.

Data migration to a new platform

Mukama’s product catalog consisted of thousands of SKUs, each containing a significant amount of technical product information that many customers want to review before making a purchase. Over the years, this product information had been enriched significantly, making each product highly detailed with specific data. In addition to basic product information, each item included recommendations, manufacturer details, instructions, video and image content, and customer reviews.

Additionally, the long-running online store had generated hundreds of thousands of multi-currency orders. All customer and order data were migrated to the Shopify Plus platform, preserving the integrity of the data and enabling the continued growth of existing customer relationships.

Shopify Plus: Excellence in International Sales

For a brand with a strong foothold in international sales, a unified, multi-language, and market-specific storefront was implemented on the Shopify Plus platform. With Shopify Markets, a four-language shopping experience was created, where sales in each designated market are conducted in the local currency, language, and with market-specific settings.

Through Shopify Markets and a localized storefront, customers are offered a more personalized shopping experience with tailored product recommendations, and in the future, with customized campaigns and content.

Shopify Payments, along with customs and tax settings, allowed significant cost savings in international sales, enhancing profit margins as international sales continue to grow.

Customizing the customer journey and optimizing processes

Switching platforms often brings changes to the customer journey and internal processes. Together with the client, we analyzed and identified the best practices both internally and in the customer journey. We implemented extensive theme customizations at various stages of the customer journey, making shopping easy on all devices. These customizations were built on a performance-optimized theme, further improving the site's performance. Additionally, with Shopify’s advanced automation solutions and app ecosystem, we were able to automate and expedite manual processes.

Through data migration and the site rebuild on Shopify Plus, all aspects of the business were centralized on a single, scalable, and continuously evolving platform.
